Both course assignments are very helpful projects that will aid in our individual futures. By discussing the validity, strengths, and weaknesses of claims, we are introduced to new tools that will help us to evaluate statements that we may come across in our lives. Our group project for assignment #2 discussed the World Wildlife Fund’s latest mission – saving the tiger. The research we have conducted over our project has allowed us to decide whether or not the organization has a reasonable cause to make the claims on their website, and whether or not we should support their claims and their overall mission.
Additionally, both assignments have actually helped with communication skills. With technology playing such a large role in communication for current times, many of us have elected to take an online class for various reasons. But sitting behind a computer screen and communicating to another individual sometimes creates a communication block. There is no physical interaction. By assigning group projects for an online class, it forces the students to communicate effectively and efficiently, for many of us have busy schedules that may be tough to accommodate for one another. This can be carried into future careers, where many large corporations contain many locations in different parts of the world. This group project can give a similar real-world experience on how to work in a team in such an environment.

ReplyDeleteThat is interesting that you and your group decided to choose the World Wildlife Fund for Project Number two. I am not familiar with it. You made a very good point in that we often must conduct our own research to believe others' claims as valid. Yes, it is a process that requires work but the result is us having confidence in believing something that we know has good supporting evidence.
I was very hesitant, as you mentioned, taking a group communications course online (let alone doing group work as well for this class). This is the age of increased technology use and now, I have come to realize that it has a world of potential to be beneficial to me. Through blogging, I can effectively communicate with my other classmates that I have never seen before. Overall, I am glad that I can feel that I am working in a team, while conducting work and assignments on-line.
I agree with you and the point you make of how these assignments have helped with communication skills. Communication is definitely important when working in groups. Assigning these group projects does force us to communicate effectively and efficiently. It helps our organizational skills and helps us to be a responsible team member. Whether it is setting up a meeting time, establishing a place to meet, or gathering information to bring together for our paper, communication is necessary and important to accomplishing a task or goal for a group. Working in groups is great because work can be divided and there will be a smaller workload on an individual person.
